Tet Trung Thu

Last Sunday I celebrated Tet Trung Thu or the the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival as we refer to it in America. I had such a fun time! Sandy and I went out with some of her old students to Ho Chi Minh Square.

On a side note, this is my teammate Sandy. She is so wonderful and I am truelly glad that I was put on a team with her. She has already been in Vinh for five years, so she kind of knows the ropes around here. It has been so great to not be completly clueless as to what is going on around me!

The festival is very much like a combination of our Halloween and Thanksgiving. Children parade on the streets, while singing and carrying colorful lanterns of different sizes. Some of the popular shapes include fishes, stars, butterflies and a lantern that spins when a candle is inserted, representing the earth circling the sun.
Dances are also traditional, and include the dragon dance and the flower dance. Many time children will dress up like dragons and dance in order to get money from people. This picture is so blury because I took it in the middle of me freaking out. Sandy and I were driving around on her motorbike and we stopped to take a picture of these kids dressed up like a dragon and then they spotted us. It is not hard to pick us out of a crowd because we are pretty much the only foreigners in town. As soon as they saw us they began to make a path straight for us. I freaked out of course because it was a dragon coming after me, and told Sandy to put her foot on the gas and get us out of there. We got away just as the dragon opened its mouth to take a bite out of my arm. This may seem a little dramatic but that is just how I remember it.

It is customary to give Banh Trung Thu, boxes of moon cakes, which are traditionally very rich in taste. The cakes are filled with lotus seeds, ground beans and orange peels and have a bright yoke in the center to represent the moon. As wonderful as this may sound I think that it is an aquired taste, and I don't think that I aquired it.

All in all it was a very fun day full of Vietnamese culture and excitement!

Sounds like you two are having a good time. If your partner blogs you should post her link so folks can follow the 'Vinh Team'.

Maybe you should convert some good 'ol Aggie yells to use for the Vinh Team. Could 'Farmer's Fight' ever work for you there?
